ABOUT ME - Dylan Elie Halff

I am a Swiss amateur photographer born in 1993, and my preferred focus is on wildlife and landscapes. Waking up at 4AM to catch a sunrise, or even sleeping 4 hours a day for a week to get the most out of a safari are not things that scare me. I love photography and I am willing to make big sacrifices in order to capture great shots.

My interest in photography arose in July 2013, after a month working on a summer job I spent my whole salary on a Canon 5d Mark III. This was quite a silly thing to do, considering it is a pro camera and I did not know a thing about photography yet. But what I did know was that I would love it and strive to be the best.

Since then, I spend most of my free time working on my photography skills and teaching myself how to use different softwares. I don’t consider myself a professional; I have still got a long way to go before reaching that point. However, in the past few years I have acquired an incredible amount of knowledge in photography techniques, that I am nonetheless still learning how to improve.

On this website you will see part of my work. I will do my best to upload as many GOOD pictures as possible.

I hope you enjoy looking at my work- Please criticize it! It will help me improve my skills. Also, feel free to ask questions.

Some critics say that the camera hold the absolute truth, and that editing pictures afterwards is cheating. They often take the example of an analogue camera to support their claims. I am here to tell you that they are absolutely WRONG. Even in the old days it was possible to reframe a picture, add more contrast and even erase objects. It is simply easier today.

Nowadays, saying that a camera has the absolute truth would imply that the algorithm created by camera manufacturer is intelligent enough to handle every situation. This is like saying that a one size fits-all suit would look great on every person on this earth. Silly isn’t it?

Editing a photo is not only about what you saw at that moment, but what you felt and wanted to share that with the world. And trust me people, you will not be able to do so in automatic mode.

If I told you that my wildlife pictures, for example ofcheetahs are not colour corrected I would be lying. Of course they are edited, one doesn’t need a degree to notice it. But what you don’t see is the hours spent under 40 degrees Celsius, holding 10kg of equipment, looking through a viewfinder, staying focused on the subject and waiting for the perfect moment to hit the shutter and capture the shot. I am one of the few people that is willing to endure this and that’s precisely why I am one of the few people to own these kind of pictures.

Looking through my work you might say to yourself that this or that is not real, however I guarantee you that my editing is simply light and colour correction, to present to you the image I had envisioned in my mind.

Welcome to my world

Why a website?

Having a website does not guarantee you are a good photographer. Actually who is qualified enough to criticize your work? As long as you are having fun learning and taking pictures, that’s it! I am proud of my work and think they stayed too long on my hard drive. Now I want to share my work with photographers and people that are into photography. Often I have been inspired by other photographers, If I could give inspiration to even only one person that would mean the world to me.

It took some time for me to create this site and it is not finished yet! I hope you will enjoy browsing through my website.

Have a nice trip
